French Opera singer Natalie Dessay receives a ‘sublime’ review at Barbican
Location: Barbican Hall, London, England
Dates: October 3, 2015, 10:33AM

Natalie Dessay is arguably the only top-ranked soprano that has come out of France. A few years ago when she performed in London in La Fille d Regiment, she wowed crowds and began a shining career performing in the world’s top opera houses. Wanting to show off her range and versatility beyond French composers, this weekend Dessay chose a theme of heavyweight German art songs. Although it was an unusual choice for her, Dessay wowed the crowds and received ample applause and exaltations. France may not have produced many female opera stars, but certainly Dessay will be amongst those ranks of the best in France and in the world as well.

The Museum is located in Barceloneta and gives a tour of the evolution of Catalonia from it’s origins to present. We went through the Museum for two and a half hours and completed a packet detailing the specifics of Catalonian history. The packet covered the colonization and development of early Romans, The role of the Church in the Middle Ages, and the incorporation of Modernist buildings in the context of the City. The trip was ended atop of the museum at the restaurant and bar.

Construction Techniques of the Modernista
This week in the Building Technologies class with Pia we learned about the Construction techniques of the Modernist movement in Barcelona. We specifically learned a lot about the techniques of Antonio Gaudi and his innovations with use of the catenary arch and photography to create the design of Sagrada Familia. In class we also lead into discussion about how Gaudi was heavily criticized in his time as an architect and yet now his architecture inspires millions of travelers from around the globe to Barcelona specifically to see his buildings.

Visit to Economists HQ
This Tuesday we accompanied Merce to one of Roladán + Berengué’s very own projects, the Economists HQ. This building is situated on a very small plot and addresses many other challenges to design as well such as the surrounding neighborhood height, the close proximity to the metro, and the low budget. These challenges, however, is something that Roladán + Berengué thrive on, and we were shown how each and every challenge was answered. There’s nothing quite like visiting a site with the architect who designed it, and Merce was very thorough in her lively description of how they were able to not only win the commission, but also teach the community and provide a much used public piece of architecture.

Getting ready for midterm

This week in studio the students has been engaging in editing and revising our initial presentation boards to get our ideas ready for the midterm review that is only one short week away. As the midterm approaches, some students are pressing forward with full scale models, while others are focusing still on diagrams and digital models. More than a few ideas were shut down this week by Miguel and Quim, leaving some students scrambling for inspiration and ideas before our last review with them before the midterm review next week.
