Design Studio Final Projects

Barcelona´s old city center is being molded and influenced by different urban, cultural, social and economic forces while still remaining an economical place to live. Past, present and future dynamics are also complexly layered on the area and at the fringes of this dense tissue. The “Rondes”, areas around the old city center, are generous avenues placed where the city walls use to seat.

The project site was located in Ronda Sant Antoni, 66 / Carrer de Valldonzella. The triangular plot is found along these hybrid streets generated between the grid of the Eixample and the dense and irregular configuration of ¨Ciutat Vella¨. The buildings and structures placed on these edges offer the opportunity to re-imagine an urban gateway that serves and celebrates the dynamics of their setting. The students were challenged to design and program a hybrid structure for its multifarious potential users.

Learning from the City

Throughout the semester students learned about being a practicing architect in the city through everything from visiting prominent projects in the city guided by their architects to touring the production facilities of local manufactures. Below are some highlights of their experiences.

Sant Antoni Market

BAC Fall 2017 visited San Antoni Market On October 7, 2017.

The Mercat de Sant Antoni was designed by Antoni Rovira i Trias in 1882. The historic Market was the first to be designed outside of Barcelona´s city walls. The project has been under rehabilitation since 2007  by RavetllatRibas Arquitectes and is set to be open in 2018.

Leading Architect Pere Joan Ravetllat guided students through the construction site. Pere explained the design challenges and opportunities this restoration project presented to his firm, and how they have navigated the project over the past 10 years.

Walden 7

Walden 7 was completed in 1975 and was designed by world-renowned Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill. The design embodies the architect´s earliest ideas on how to address housing problems of modern city life.

Walden Resident, Alexandra Olivella, guided students through the complex that she has called home for over 10 years.  Students gained an inside perspective on the activity and livelihood of the building through the point of view of one of its inhabitants.
